DOCTORS, Dr Luis Hurtado in August 2023, and Dr. Mark steeler in March and November 2023

DEAR MAX

When this pain started back in March of 2023 it definitely was not as severe and as disabling as it is now.

So, when I made an appointment with my first ear, nose, and throat physician back then,  the physicians name was Dr. Steelher  and I were certain that this was a sinus issue. I  had a lot of issues with this particular problem. I even had sinus balloon surgery with another doctor  this however was a big mistake.

Unfortunately, when I saw this doctor, he figured that it was just a sinus infection, so he gave me some antibiotics and sent me on my way.

The next doctor that I saw was a neurologist by the name of Luis Hurtado. (Scroll down to August 26, 2023 to read about this) Neurologists are very difficult to get into here. This is why I waited so long. This appointment unfortunately went quite badly. Dr. Hurtado spoke to me in a derogatory way. Basically, he didn’t believe me. So, I left his office close to tears and with a bottle of muscle relaxers. He told me to go back to Dr. Steeler for a CT scan of my sinuses

When the month of November 2023 approached. I took my CT scan and made yet another appointment with Dr. Steeler. During the appointment, Dr. Steeler made some extremely incorrect observations about the scan.

I asked Dr. Steeler, what did he see. First of all, I asked if I even had a sinus infection. Unfortunately, for some reason, he would not give me a straight answer. I asked well do you see anything sinus related on the scan?”  His answer was I see some inflammation in there. Dr. Steeler obviously did not know my issue either, so he decided to diagnose me with a condition I did not have. I believe the condition was chronic rhinosinusitis. He told me to go see a doctor called a rhinologist in Tampa, which is 80 miles away. I did not heed his advice because it didn’t make a lot of sense, and he sent me on my way. Once again, with no answer πŸ˜• So it was time to do some more searching.

You have my sympathies. I have trigeminal neuralgia, and it took years to find something to control the pain (after years of doctors telling me it was TMJ). I wish you luck as you search

Oh my goodness you have trigeminal neuralgia.. oh my goodness I am so sorry. I also have had doctors tell me this is Tmj. If you ever want to exchange stories. How were you able to control the pain?

I’m allergic to Tegretol which works for a lot of people. Luckily, I found a neurologist who was willing to keep trying. I’ve been on Elavil and pain-free for a year now.

Oh I’m so happy for you! How long did it take you to find a neurologist who was willing to keep trying? How long were you looking for a doctor?

About 8 years (off and on). Where I live (in SE Michigan), we have several good hospital networks. I discovered that one of them is much more open-minded towards trying non-standard alternatives.

Well I certainly am glad you finally found the right doctor. It just seems extremely hard here in Florida. With it taking a year to get into most Neurologists. And my insurance basically not letting me in anywhere unless they are in network. So is elavil a non standard treatment?

It’s actually an anti-depressant. If you have a good PCP, they might be willing to prescribe it. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6447238/

Yes I am quite familiar with psychiatric drugs as i already take some. My psychiatrist and I have been trying some drugs. And none have worked so far. I have some elavil but I told her I would like to see if it’s possible to try to get a neurologist opinion first before I add another psychiatric drug. The drugs I am on are very difficult to get off of. Thank you for the comment 😊
